The problem

The login-screen lock puts the Mac to sleep, so a long build or an overnight agent run stops the moment you walk away. Leaving it unlocked means anyone, or the cat, can type.

The solution

One shortcut freezes every key, click and swipe while the machine stays awake and on screen. Press the same shortcut and it is yours again.
